چکیده

This paper presents a new approach to discrete choice analysis for risky prospects. Conventional discrete choice analysis focuses on riskless prospects and does not deal with the scenario where the alternatives that the decision-makers choose from are associated with risk. In this paper, we investigate decisionmakers’ risk perception and choice behaviour in choice experiments when they are facing several risky prospects. We propose a broad class of cumulative risky weighting functions, upon which a unified cumulative risky weighting function is developed. We show that this unified cumulative risky weighting function includes several existing cumulative risky weighting functions as special cases. We then develop a multivariate method for choice analysis with risky prospects to account for decision-makers’ individual-specific risk perception and the impact of various factors on the value function respectively. We illustrate the developed method using an empirical study on road tolling in Australia.

Modeling Gain-Loss Asymmetries in Risky Choice: The Critical Role of Probability Weighting

A robust empirical regularity in decision making is that the negative consequences of an option (i.e., losses) often have a stronger impact on people’s behavior than the positive consequences (i.e., gains). One common explanation for such a gain-loss asymmetry is loss aversion. To model loss aversion in risky decisions, prospect theory (Kahneman & Tversky, 1979) assumes a kinked value function ...

Conscious and Unconscious Thought in Risky Choice: Testing the Capacity Principle and the Appropriate Weighting Principle of Unconscious Thought Theory

Daily we make decisions ranging from the mundane to the seemingly pivotal that shape our lives. Assuming rationality, all relevant information about one's options should be thoroughly examined in order to make the best choice. However, some findings suggest that under specific circumstances thinking too much has disadvantageous effects on decision quality and that it might be best to let the un...

A framework for estimating health state utility values within a discrete choice experiment: modeling risky choices.

BACKGROUND There has been recent interest in using the discrete choice experiment (DCE) method to derive health state utilities for use in quality-adjusted life year (QALY) calculations, but challenges remain. OBJECTIVES We set out to develop a risk-based DCE approach to derive utility values for health states that allowed 1) utility values to be anchored directly to normal health and death a...

Preference Reversals Under Ambiguity

Preference reversals have been widely studied using risky or riskless gambles. However, little is known about preference reversals under ambiguity. We asked subjects to make a binary choice between ambiguous P-bets and ambiguous $-bets and elicited their willingness to accept. Subjects then performed the same two tasks with risky bets, where the probability of winning for a given risky bet is t...

Is Payoff Necessarily Weighted by Probability When Making a Risky Choice? Evidence from Functional Connectivity Analysis

How people make decisions under risk remains an as-yet-unresolved but fundamental question. Mainstream theories about risky decision making assume that the core processes involved in reaching a risky decision include weighting each payoff or reward magnitude by its probability and then summing the outcomes. However, recently developed theories question whether payoffs are necessarily weighted b...
